Today in Literacy we continued making connections to our non-fiction texts.
In Music we are learning basic rhythm patterns and cords on the piano. In Gym we were with Ms. Hirst's class and tried our best to complete our impossible obstacle course. This afternoon we had Library with Ms. Hunt who helped us find just right books. In Math we started the "big 7" model in division. Many of us had a hard time with this, so we will spend a couple days practicing. In Science we started to draw basic circuit diagrams using the proper scientific symbols. Agenda Message: - We have an assembly on Friday - There is no school February 15th and 16th and 19th due to teachers conventions and family day holiday.

Today in Literacy Block we continued to look at non fiction texts.
We are continually setting goals for Literacy Block and learning to make connections to what we are reading. In Math we did a self assessment on problem solving and finished our factors practice sheet. In Gym we continued with Mission Impossible. As most of you already know by now, an Incident took place this afternoon and an email and letter has been sent home with each student. There was a small fire in the school over our lunch hour. Our fire alarms went off and all safety precautions were taken place. There was no one harmed and all students were evacuated safely to James Short Elementary. We would like to make it clear that we take this issue very seriously and the well being of our students and staff come first. We are very proud of how the kids handled the situation. In Music we are researching celtic music instruments and playing cords on the piano. In Math we looked at the parts of a division sentence and defined them. We then worked with buttons and looked at how many ways we could break up the number 32 into equal groups. In Science we looked at what Electricity is and what makes a circuit. In Gym we continued with mission impossible and will be doing that for the next couple weeks. Agenda message: No School on Friday January 26, 2018. In Gym we started mission impossible and will be doing that for the next couple weeks. In the afternoon we had library and looked at the wide variety of non-fiction texts that we have in our Library. We are now switching to non-fiction texts and will be assigned new groups.
Our non-fiction text was a Canadian article around fossils in the Yukon. In Math we started with division and did a repeated subtraction problem in our math notebooks. In Science we finished up our posters and will present tomorrow. In Gym we start mission impossible this week. Agenda Message: Friday there is no school. In Math we solved our problem of the week and went over it as a class. We then had time to make any corrections or additions to our work. In Science we continued with our electricity safety posters. In Gym we did a peer assessment on our gymnastic skills. In Chang Makers we had a class discussion on what are the characteristics and attributes of a Change Maker. We will use this information to make our own definition of what being a Change maker means. In Math we started to solve our problem of the week as a class. We will discuss in more detail tomorrow. In Science we started to learn about electricity safety and started to make our own electrical safety rules. In Mindfulness we talked about being in the moment and how mindfulness can help us focus or complete our work. We finished with some mindful colouring. In Gym we played organizational games and practiced our gymnastic skills that we were taught this week. Agenda Message: Please sign and bring back your report card envelope. We had a guest speaking from Bob Edwards School on their French Immersion program. they have an open house on Thursday February 8 at 6:30pm. Today we continued to make personal connections to the problems our characters are facing during guided reading.
In Math we continued with our problem of the week "Picturing Square Numbers". In Science we are starting a new unit on electricity. In Gym we are doing gymnastics and started to practice some of the fundamental skills. Hope everyone had a lovely break and feel relaxed and rejuvenated for 2018! Coming back from our break we are jumping right back in to the swing of things. In Literacy we continued with our guided reading instruction. In Mathematics we started a problem of the week, and will be working on it throughout the week. In Mindfulness and Social Studies (seeing that it was Martin Luther King day) we looked Martin Luther King Jr. and his positive impact on civil/human rights and social change. We also did some writing on our favorite memories from our Winter Break. Agenda Message: Please sign and return report card envelopes. Sir John Franklin is an Arts integrated school and will have an Arts showcase on February 1st from 7:00pm-7:45 followed by classroom tours until 8:30 pm.
