We continued with Somewhere Today but unfortunately we had some technically difficulties with our laptops, so we will continue that on Monday. We had a successful Lock Down Drill, and room 5 was able to use their silent games and mindfulness techniques well during this time. During FINE ART FRIDAY we finished up our skyline artwork, adding detail to our foreground. For those that finished we started doing a hand tracing art and will continue that for next week. Agenda Message: - Pizza forms are due back Friday 22nd - Welcome BBQ at James Short Memorial September 21 from 4-5 pm. - Student/Parent/Teacher conferences are on Thursday Sept 21 (5-8 pm) and Friday September 22 (8:30-1 pm). - You will be able to sign up on Monday September 18 at 7 am.

Today What Went Well Was
In room 5 today We continued to add more detail to our Somewhere today sentences and started sharing our work with Mr. Kaduhr on google drive. In Math we introduced decimals to our place value charts and explored tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. We took a closer look at the circle of courage, specifically about mastery and accomplishing goals. We have our orange shirt day coming up so we watched a video by Dr. Martin Brokenleg on the Circle of Courage. We made little orange shirts with a mastery sentence on them. In music, we got to draw our landscapes. In gym, we continued with our soccer unit In math, we had a check-in to see how we're doing with place value. In room 5 we continued to work on our Somewhere Today Sentences in Literacy Block. They are becoming much better as we are continuing to add more detail and real world connections. We started using the laptops and will create our own google slides book for Somewhere Today. In Library, we looked at the 00's section of the library where we can find books about, religion, Mythology, Ghost stories, philosophy, Science. The Library is an excellent source for all sorts of reading material. And students can sign out books at anytime. Agenda Message: - Mindfulness assignment for Mr. Siakaluk. We continued working on number sense and place value in Math today and practiced writing numbers in standard form, expanded form, and written form. We also started talking about Terry Fox and we started to build our stamina in gym for our run on September 29. Agenda Message: - Scholastic book orders are due tomorrow (if you reciceved on from Mrs. Tonkin) -Safety Patrols have started. Make sure you are familiar with your schedule and your fellow patrollers. Today we continued journal prompt writing in literacy time, as well as took time to edit and add detail to our favorite journal entry so far.
We also continued our FINE ART FRIDAYS and finished our landscape/cityscape artwork. This was a great showcase our our creative and artistic sides in room 5. With FINE ART FRIDAYS can come a big mess, and I was very proud of how well we cleaned up for our facility staff. Agenda Messages -Please return any picture day forms if you would like to order pictures. -We are having a lockdown drill on Friday the 15th and will be practicing for that this week. -Conferences are on September 21 & 22! Setting an example for the rest of the school becoming leaders at G.W. Skene. We continued our work around Somewhere today at G.W. Skene and we will be starting our good copies next week. In math we started and completed an activity showing place value through shapes and symbols. We continued to work with our curtain open during literacy block and this will become more frequent across all subjects as the year goes. Agenda Message Make sure to return any picture day forms. They are due on Friday September 15th. Tomorrow we will continue with FINE ART FRIDAYS after our literacy block. Today in room 5 we worked towards extending our vocabulary by brainstorming words and verbs for our work around Somewhere Today. These will be compiled into a word cloud that will be on display for our class to see.

This was our second day with our curtain open sharing the space with Ms. Hirst's class. In our music class we continued Ted harrison landscapes art. In language we continued our work around the Somewhere Today book and we started becoming more descriptive in our somewhere today sentences. focusing on designing a class rubric. Room 5 is constantly improving with classroom routines and working in flexible groups. However we still have a lot of work to do. This will be very important to keep up as we start to dive more and more into rich learning tasks. Agenda Message: Today in Grade 5 photo forms were sent home and must be submitted before Friday September 15th if you would like to order. We had our first fire drill today and room 5 was awesome!!! very proud of how serious they took the exercise. Welcome back from what I hope was a very relaxing and enjoyable long weekend!
Today in class we started our choice boards in guided reading and continued to write stories from picture prompts during our literacy block. In Math we continued to work through place value as we introduced a decimals. We continued to work through our somewhere today picture book and each student shared their favorite sentence with me on Google Drive. In Gym we continued to play collaborative games. And this afternoon we continued our work with our librarian Ms. Hunt as she continued to help us found just right books for guided reading. * If you would like a Scholastic Book Order please see Mrs. Tonkin in room 11.
